Zodiac Academy: The Awakening
Another, but different book club read! I had two book clubs this weekend, and it was excellent!
This is a solid 3/5. I am intrigued by the general plot, and want to know what the hell is going on between the different factions. However, I’m very meh about the characters. No one listens to the twins when they say they do not want the throne, they just want their financial and magical inheritance. Not even their supporters listen!
The bullying bothers the shit out of me, even if I get where the attraction comes from. I don’t see how anything but a hate fuck can come out of the relationships between the Heirs and the Twins, and yet relationships seem to be in the offing for the Twins and some of their torturers.
Also, the coercion power terrifies me. The authors write it off as like, “oh, everyone can block coercion at birth, tee hee!” Except the twins, and if there is a more powerful being than someone, they can break down their defenses. I have spent too much time with humanity to think that it wouldn’t be used in worse and more harmful ways. SA, forcing others to commit crimes, including SA, and also, taking away someone’s free will is just… ugh. This book would probably be very triggering to someone who has been emotionally manipulated in the past, or SA’d, or other relational traumas I probably can’t even think of right now.
I will probably read the rest of the series so I can fricken find out how it ends, but it won’t be an immediate thing that takes place. I want to know what the twins’ orders are, I want to know who is good and who is not. Or I guess, who is good, who is straight up evil, and who is morally grey.
Zodiac Academy: Ruthless Fae – Jenny Bean Reads
[…] What is happening to me. I am writing this after having just finished Shadow Princess, because I am a monster who cannot be stopped! I have read Ruthless Fae, The Reckoning, and Shadow Princess over the last few days and I am literally forcing myself to stop to write these up. (The Awakening review is here) […]
