Betting on You

This was really interesting to me to read. As a bonus mom to a bonus daughter, my heart really ached for both Charlie and for Bailey. Their bio parents did an absolute shit job communicating with them and helping them transition into these new living situations. We emphasize communication immensely with aforementioned daughter. We communicate until she’s bored with us so that we know that she got it, and was able to express her feelings. Granted, I’ve been around since she was about 2, and she’s 11 now, so it’s not quite the same situation. BUT STILL. COMMUNICATE YOU USELESS LUMPS.

The love story between Bailey and Charlie was adorable, and I loved the paths crossing – like the universe was trying to push them together. I appreciate the bonding they went through, slowly building trust after their initial meeting. I also appreciated the care Scott showed for Bailey, even though he was a little heavy handed when Charlie first shows up on the scene.

The failure of the parents to communicate and make their children feel heard rears its head when Charlie failing to communicate with Bailey in the third act, and Bailey’s failing to communicate with Nekesa through out the book and especially in the third act. Otherwise, I really enjoyed reading this slice of life!

I just wish I had remembered to check for the playlist before I read it so I could listen to it while I read – so this is your heads up! Don’t forget the playlist! And, if it’s spiciness you’re looking for, look elsewhere! This is about two teenagers in high school. It would be hella gross if there was spicierness in it.
